@nitrrogen__ Mostly for geopolitical reasons. If the Baltics never were occupied or Eastern Europeans never occupied and were allowed to voluntarily join an early EU they would be better economically than under the USSR

@TheEternalKraut It's simply that the EU is more efficient than the USSR. But comes the question, would eastern europe BE in the EU to begin with without the fall of the USSR? Western Europe was very reluctant to let them in.
